Henna is a flowering plant. It is also called 'Mehndi' in India. The leaves of henna is dried and made powder out of it to use for dying the heir and clothes, too. The main use of henna power is to paint temporary tattoos on hands, legs, thighs, back, and even on the breasts. The modern tattoo lovers would like to have henna on their back, shoulders or around belly button. Henna is easy to inscribe and much easy to remove. Henna power is an ancient material used in India and Asian countries since many centuries. The tattoos made with henna power are the body art that is widely popular among the native Indians. These tattoos are done on auspicious occasions like marriage and celebration of engagement of a man and a woman.

In India the women invariably inscribe henna tattoos on their marriage ceremony. The invite tattoo artists one week before the occasion and get the tattoo on their bodies. The bride would prefer the henna tattoo of various design on her palms, hands, face, legs, belly button and even on thighs.

Unlike other tattoos, the method of applying henna is very a very simple. No more material other than a plastic cone filled with henna paste is required. The tattoo artist would do it just like the painting is done on paper with brushes. The henna paste can be applied with the help of brushes, too. The main advantages of these tattoos is that it does not go very much inside of skin. so it is almost harmless.
These tattoos are done by men and women. The presence of these tattoos on hands and legs are believed to be the sign of pleasure shown on the event of Hindu and Muslim marriages; and it is also done while celebrating religious occasions. Henna, mehndi, is a recognizable presence during the festivals like Diwali, Bhaibeej, Karwa Choth and Id Mubarak Festival. The tradition of inscribing henna has reached European countries and America during last quarter of twentieth century. Now a day it is equally popular throughout the world.

Henna is a temporary designs inscribed on body parts. It would remain clearly visible for two or three weeks. There after it would be washed our in natural course; or it could be washed out whenever the tattoo lover wants to do it. To remove the henna tattoos is not a big problem. Because of its easy method of removal, the henna tattoos are more popular among modern girls, college students and tribal women living in villages.
The human race has devised many rituals and customs which has wider and deeper meanings. The henna tattoos were done for various purposes other than the celebrating some pleasant occasions. It was mark of identification of a tribe member. When head hunts were done, the tattoos were like the Identity Cards. it was used to recognize the tribe of a dead person who died n flood or war.
